wishing.. well

do you honestly think
She has never wished?
hanging hope on stars;
dropping dreams in wells;
pinky finger coiled
around a wishbone;
feet lifted at rail-way
crossings, touching glass;
discarding eyelashes.

when it comes down to it
the wish has already come true
if you wish for the truth
or simply make your own

the fact of the matter is
that the waters are black.

it's a fifty-fifty chance
when you're breaking
wishbones in half.

She is not free from desire
but reserved by it
She knows who she is
but more importantly
She knows too much
of the ugly vanity that lurks
beneath the surface of such
"beautiful" waters

If She falls over the edge
and her wish drowns
in the well where it was born
it will be her own fault
for falling into this.

the fact of the matter is
that the waters are black.

and as for the rays of light
that streak through the depths
like soft, blurry lightning..

if you catch them twinkling
in your tender eyes,
if you look past your pink
lids-open underwater-
and you think you see magic

and you want to make magic
i won't ask about illusions

the fact of the matter is
that the waters are black

so when you look down into the water
and see nothing but yourself
don't be surprised

i've taken a lot of spit
in the name of truth
but it doesn't make
much of a difference
it's all the same
to the water
in this black
well

so if you make a wish
and it doesn't come true
just don't blame it on me

sincerely,
the well.
