THIS GOD WE CANNOT SEE

A Pantoum

who is this god we cannot see?
this being that we hold so dear.
do we ask ourselves, who are we
to make weak statements so clear?

this being that we hold so dear
is the manifestation of what is good;
our salvation from what we fear
telling us to do what we know we should.

is the manifestation of what is good
omnipotent, omnipresent, and pure?
how can we protect from falsehood
all that blind faith can assure?

omnipotent, omnipresent, and pure:
the creator of a world full of evil.
if god is full of such grandeur
could he not simply defeat the devil?

the creator of a world full of evil
could not be all powerful and good.
although he has given us free will,
the implications are not understood.

all powerful and good, god just couldn't be.
from ourselves, who now will save us
when the great good works passively?
the innocent suffer and we make no fuss.

from ourselves, who now will save us?
if salvation is in our own hands,
then our world is indeed hopeless.
to save our fate, we answer His commands.

if salvation is in our own hands
and our will is indeed so free,
then we should not make such demands
for our race to be so damn godly.

since our will is indeed so free,
we can find virtue inside ourselves.
educated in ethical philosophy,
we need no bibles on our shelves

we can find virtue inside ourselves.
do we ask ourselves, who are we?
we need no bibles on our shelves.
who is this god we cannot see?
